We went to Holdenby House on Friday 19th September. We learnt about WWII. We went into an air raid shelter and heard a recording of an air raid siren and it was loud! We found out lots about food rationing and even went into the kitchen and did some cooking with Miss North to help the soldiers get better. We said hello to one of the soldiers and got to eat lunch in a colossal army tent. It had lots of tables and benches. In the activity an old soldier showed us what was in his kit bag and a few of us got to volunteer and go and see it all. Next, we headed down to the kitchen where a vast amount of food was waiting for us. We chose from many different cooking activities including making pastry and grinding sage.
We then went down to the air raid shelter where they turned the lights off and played a recording of the air raid sirens and made the light flicker as the sound went on and on. They taught us how to put on gas masks and showed us the different masks for different ages. Toddlers had a Mickey Mouse mask and babies were put into a carrier where you pumped the air into it by hand.
We were told a story by Mrs Foe and she taught us all about fabrics and fashion. We then went to eat our lunch and we sang “The White Cliffs of Dover” by Vera Lynn.

I loved going to Holdenby House. I learnt so many things including what rations were and that children were evacuated as they are the future army.

I loved the bit when we went to a room with food in it. They taught us about food rationing. Then we got to make food for the soldiers upstairs. It was super fun.
